We Dig Dixie.
Recovering And Preserving America Past

It was 2009 on a trip to Port Hudson La. with 3 friends that the name “We Dig Dixie” was created. This is our story and what we are about. The three of us were about 400 miles from La. Leaving NC and started talking about starting our own site, but none of us had any clue that it would become what it is today. We figured that if everyone else had a site online then why couldn’t we? So we started to spit out names of what the site should be called there was possibly hundreds of names that we came up with that night but the one that stuck was “We Dig Dixie

The name “We Dig Dixie” was meant to explain a name for many treasure and relic hunters that have relentlessly searched for treasure all over “Dixie” which is a term that was used during the War Between the States in 1861-1865. As our site began to grow we added a forum which was meant to bring all hobbyists and hunters together all over “Dixie” to one place where we could all exchange our finds and talk about the hobby. What is the “hobby” might you ask? The hobby of Metal Detecting is a worldwide hobby to were people use boats with magtometers to search for sunken ships that carried barrels of gold and silver and people that use Metal Detectors or Ground Penetrating Radars to locate valuable items buried in the ground. Famous hunters such as Team Odyssey that has been featured on the Discovery Channel that found the richest shipwreck in the world “the atocha” carrying more than 200 million dollars in gold or Meteorite men that search for meteorites in the western part of the states, are just a few that are “treasure” or “relic” hunters that are In the hobby.

There are different kinds of hobbyists there are those that hunt parks for jewelry and coins, beach hunters that look for washed up items from shipwrecks or peoples belonging s that they left behind, coin shooters that hunt for old coins, relic hunters that search for items from the Revolutionary War up to the Civil War and many, many more. As all three of us guys were relic hunters that search for items from the Civil War that is what We Dig Dixie was originally based upon and singled toward. But as our site began to grow we opened it to all people in the hobby. Our Slogan “Researching, Recovering & Preserving America’s Past” means exactly what is says. We do the Research to find these sites, we Recover the relics when granted permission to search it and we Record and Preserve the items when found.

There are rules in the hobby as well, some people obey by the rules and others do not, the ones that do not make the hobby look bad for everyone. People that trespass or go on a piece of private property without permission, and get caught make it very hard for the next guy that is trying to it right to get permission b/c the landowner now has a bad taste in his/her mouth. Also people that dig holes and do not fill them in also make others look bad, how would you like it if someone came in your front yard and just left uncovered holes everywhere, same concept.

We Dig Dixie has done everything by the book we have been relic hunting for 9 years and have been featured in many worldwide magazines, and have also made the front page of two papers in two different counties with our finds. We have donated many of our finds to local museums so that our younger and older generations can learn from our American history. We travel the Eastern Seaboard in search of relics that are more than 150 years old, from NC to Va, La, Al, Ma,Tn, SC, and many other states. One of our best finds has been the George Washington Inaugural buttons which were worn by civilians during his election as President of the United States, buttons like ours were also featured In the Movie National Treasure. If you have ever had the urge to dig buried treasure or learn more about history then please visit our site at We Dig Dixie sign up and become a member, I can personally promise you that you will learn much and have fun doing it. Our site would not have been possible without our wonderful sponsors which will help you get in the hobby please visit them as well, @ Big Boys Hobbies , Colonial Metal Detectors and Garrett Metal Detectors should get you started. We hope you have learned something about the hobby of metal detecting and hope to see you at We Dig Dixie!!
